僕の英語どうにかして！プライベート・レッスン 3回目

今日の課題はなんと前回にいただいた「名詞を修飾する現在分詞・過去分詞」を説明したテキストをPPTスライドに「英語」でまとめたものと、ある政府とやっている法律文書の翻訳プロジェクトの僕の文をみてもらうことにした。

目下の目標が「英語の文法を英語で考える！」ことなので、うってつけな課題でした。

Present, Past Participle to Modify Nouns

結構、難しい。自分の考えている英語での説明を文法用語もふくめて英語で説明する。自分の疑問も抽象的な内容であっても英語で話す費用がある。もしかしたら、この先生、日本語本当はしゃべれるんじゃないかって考えがしょっちゅう、よぎるんだけど、あ〜鍛えられるね。

もう一つは「法律文書」の「政府の翻訳」の「添削」ってなんで、英語ができない自分がこんなタスクを受けるのかわからないけど、ごく一部を課題に取り上げてみた。これは面白かったし、仕事に直結していてよかった。まずは「添削前」

不純物として含まれる化合物については、その含有割合が１重量％未満の場合は、当該化合物は新規化学物質として取り扱わないものとする。なお、「不純物」とは、目的とする成分以外の未反応原料、反応触媒、指示薬、副生成物（意図した反応とは異なる反応により生成したもの）等をいう（以下同じ。）。

With regard to chemical compounds containing impurities, if the content thereof is less than 1 wt.%, the said chemical compounds shall not be handled as a new chemical substance. “Impurities” refer to unreacted raw materials, reaction catalysts, indicators or byproducts (substances generated through unintended reaction), etc. (The same applies hereafter.)

おおむね、いいねって言われたけど、やっぱりNativeにみてもらうのは大切だと思った。上の翻訳には問題がないけど、はやひが言ってるのを表現するとこんな感じか？と

... the said chemical compounds are not considered to be a new chemical substance. ...

 日本語の「取り扱う」って結構、英語に翻訳するの難しんですよね。前後関係で使われる単語がこんな風に変わってしまう。
